write NOW NOW 7/30/01 >> Mr. Larson has this to say about his Blender original pictured below : I'd like to extend the invitation to any Bend readers who find themselves in Torrance, to feel free and stop by and view this nice drawing in person. Any preservation/framing ideas for the little guy? I feel sort of bad having it just chillin' on my computer monitor... not that bad actually. >> David Greenberger of Duplex Planet fame sent in this link to a site he created with his friend Eddie Gorodetsky -- it has the best web-name we've heard in a while, whenlpsroamedtheearth.com. We suggest you start right here on THIS page. Youtharama rocks. THEN 7/28/01 >> Okay, it's Saturday morning and these 4 people have answered the question below correctly : Tom Dupere, Willy McNeal, rags2riches22@msn.com (come forth with your real name, cheeky monkey), and Mark Carroll. Yes, it is the one and only Neil Blender. The drawing is a tiny one (circa 1988?) that Tony Larson owns. How he got it, is a secret he's keeping to himself. Friend o' Bend Oak Kelsey actually guessed Thomas Cambell. Oak... come on, man. Tom, Willy, Rags and Mark, send your street addreses and your choice of Bend Book and we'll put them in the mail right away. As for Blender, maybe you'll see more of his work on Bend some time soon. But don't hold your breath... THEN 7/27/01 >> Tell us the artist of this piece and we'll send you a free book. ![]() THEN 7/26/01 >> Finally got some photos of This is the Flow from the inside of De Vleeshal. Gracias, Rutger Wolfson. THEN 7/25/01, 3:49pm PST >> Here's the Curled Cat to go with the Smoking Dog. THEN 7/25/01, 3:25pm PST >> Daniel Clowes fans must view this trailer from the Fantagraphics site. Go staight to the clip. THEN 7/25/01 >> The Arkitip web site has added a new feature -- the Intellegence Report. It's basically a random news section written by a few different contributors as chosen by Arkitip's Scott Andrew Snyder. You'll find 4, 5 or 6 updates a day. Usually good -- funny or informative. Or both. Go. >> A Philly gig you should check out if you're anywhere near there on the dates indicated : "Caught: Four Philadelphia Skateboard Photographers." Skate and non-skate photos by Ryan Gee, Adam Wallacavage, Kelly Ryan and Frankie. Opening reception Fri., Aug. 3, with a secondary "because the X Games are in town" reception Fri. Aug. 17, at Space 1026, 1026 Arch St. Philadelphia. Organized by 1026er Ben Woodward with an assist by fake curator, Rick Valenzuela. Tied into this somehow is a club party/show type deal for Sat., Aug. 18 at the Gasoline nightclub In Philly. All-ages (well, 18/21), two rooms: dan the Automator and Prince Paul DJing, along with local DJs Sean Agnew and Ralph (from Franklin) and Dälek playing, in the hip-hop-type room. In the other, it's about 99 percent sure that it'll be Superchunk, playing with Transmegeti and local indie/brit and rock DJs Julian and Chris Poliquin, respectively. In the hip-hop room, Cosmo might DJ, which is pretty cool; his folks owned Spike's Skates in the late 80s/early 90s, and they ran the big Philly contests back in the day. Thanks to Rick Valenzuela for the info. THEN 7/24/01 >> We got some answers to the question, "What is Bend?" THEN 7/23/01 >> SKY H, the hard-bound design book (including a CDRom of images and interviews) from Hong Kong which features the likes of Andy Jenkins, Evan Hecox, Michael Leon, Shepard Fairey, Dave Kinsey, X-Large, Giant Robot, and a few others, has been found on the web. THEN 7/19/01 >> Here's a photo of the Girl Art Dump crew in the Netherlands during the "This is the Flow" opening at De Vleeshal in Middleburg. The zine/catalog created for the show, along with the invitation "tail" sticker and poster are available on the Bend Consumption Machine. The board series will be available from Girl Skateboards in the fall. Click here for a copy of the press release for "This is the Flow." THEN 7/18/01 >> There is a band called The Zincs who have a brand new recording on Ohio Gold records. It's called "Moth and Marriage" and you should listen to a portion of it for yourself (2 MP3s available) on the Bend Ear. We like it so much we are selling it in the Bend Consumption Machine. What the hell is Bend these days? If you have an idea, please let us know as soon as possible. THEN 7/10/01 >> Johnny Brewton's X-Ray boxes (issue #8 of X-Ray) sold out in less than a week. Concider yourself lucky if you got ahold of one. ![]() THEN 7/08/01 >> Bend has learned of two sad tragedies. Girl family member Keenan Milton was found dead on the morning of July 5th. Keenan had been a pro for Chocolate Skateboards for almost 6 years. There is a memorial website up at keenanmilton.com. Please visit and share your thoughts. We were also informed of the passing of talented painter, Margaret Kilgallen, at the end of June, from breast cancer. Margaret leaves behind her husband, Barry McGee and their new daughter, Asha. More information is posted at the Houston site. Don Pendleton sent this quote. THEN 7/05/01 >> Bend is back from a few more weeks on the road. Here are some things that have happened : 1) Rumor is that Mark Lewman and family have been sited headed east on an interstate in Nebraska. The last Bend had heard, they were sweating and chasing killer spiders in Costa Rica. What is this man up to? Update some time soon. 2) Evan Hecox has posted an updated website. The man is just a wonder. See it. 3) Hong Kong publishing company, has released a design book entitled SKY-H, featuring Americans, Andy Jenkins, Evan Hecox, Michael Leon, Shepard Fairey, Dave Kinsey, X-Large, Giant Robot, and a few others. Hardbound with a die-cut cover and a CDRom insert (which includes live interviews), this book features an array of design/illustration/photographic work from each graphic artist/group involved. Not sure if it will be released in the USA or anywhere outside of Hong Kong, but we will keep you posted. 4) X-Ray Book & Novelty Co has released its newest (#8) handmade collaborative masterpiece. The brainchild of Johnny Brewton, X-Ray has a long standing tradition of tactile and cerebral wonders between covers. Past contributors have included W.S. Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, Richard Brautigan, Billy Childish and Mike Daily. The current issue is a set of 4"x4" cards encased in a small box. Each page -- like all past issues -- is created by the contributor and sent to Johnny for insertion into the completed X-Ray book. There is a Jenkins card included in release #8. These books are in a limited supply due to the hand-crafted nature of their production. They will soon be available through the X-Ray Book Co website. 5) Anthem, a fine magazine out of Huntington, California, has released issue number 3.
