>> Got a really neat book/zine in the mail this morning, just in time for Jesus's birthday. "On the Train to Johnny's Funeral" by David Bevan in the UK. No. 16 of 50. Thanks, David.

>> My only wish is for grace. Merry Christmas everyone.

>> The Girl Co. biannual catalog, Wallride, is kicking my ass. It's the 7th one and features a section of photos on both the Art Dump's Pedrosideways show and the Hot Chocolate Tour. Should be a good one.

>> While on the topic of Girl, I received a copy of the "LA Creators DVD, Vol. 1" from Now on DVD (Tokyo, Japan). They were here last summer and filmed at Girl for a couple days so we could be included in this collection of LA creative types. Nice people and a decent DVD. Also covered in this edition are Brand New School, dublab. Logan, Motion Theory and Shepard Fairey. The best parts of the DVD are the actual work from each creative group — for instance, Brand New School shows much of its animated interstitial work for Fuel TV and there are a couple sketches from Girl's last film, Yeah Right! The Girl section also includes interviews with myself, Andy Mueller, Rick Howard and Mike Carroll. I'm not too sure these will be available in the US, but you can cruise around the Now on DVD website for details.

>> And, while on the topic of DVDs, if you haven't checked out the "Dithers" DVD from Fifty24SF (a project of the Upper Playground people), you might want to. At least visit this link to read about it. Interesting mixture of folks on there. And you can actually buy this one online from Fifty24SF based in, where else, San Francisco.

>> Nathan Lewis has been sending jpegs of his paintings in. Great stuff which I will post some day if he's down with it. Today's Diurnal is a sketch for one of those paintings. Thanks, Nathan... oh, and thanks for this link to the ultimate secret. I think.

>> Former art director of Skateboarder magazine, Chris Yormick, moved to New York and got a show in Los Angeles. Here're the details on "Holding Weight" straight from the man himself;

"I gots an artshow at 4x4 Gallery on friday, Dec. 19th, 5-ish to 10-ish. The spot's 6313 yucca in Holla-wood, right near the capitol building. Hope to see you there."

>> Remember Luxuro (RIP)? Well, welcome agentsofthearea.com.

12/17/03

>> Jason Polan's guerilla picking its feet is really nice.

>> Ryan Schierling is uploading a photo a day on his site... "I'd like to think it will happen daily, but let's be realistic — there's laundry to do, cats to pet, food to cook, disappointments to write down. I can't be expected to shoot some brilliant, award-winning image every 24 hours. So get used to the let-down of semi-competent photos." — Ryan.

Sounds like it's going to be good.

>> So far the "Online Holiday Shopping" poll I started yesterday is going as such : 100% of the responders (two — wow, do we know how to stir the web pot or what?) shop online. 100% of the responders who shop online do over 90% of their shopping for the holidays online. 50% of them (one) feel guilty about this. You?

12/16/03

>> I didn't go to the Girl X-Mas party last night. Stayed working until almost 10 and was just too damn tired to drive to LA. I'm a bum. Sorry, compadres, but you know I love you all.

>> Thanks for the Beatles box, Mr. Wolter. Stoked.

>> We're taking a poll; how many of you shop online? If you do, how much of your holiday purchases are done online (esitimated percentage)? Me? Yes. 98%. Is that lame?

>> To the three FOBs who won the contest back in August or whenever that was — Nathan Sweeney, Jared Hughes, Leif Bjelland — WE FINALLY GOT THE PRIZES! They'll be sent out today! Apologies for the delay.

>> Fonseca wins in Arhnem, Holland, at the second round of the SXGP. It's a free for all with Reed and Carmichael out. Vet, Damon Huffman pulls in a second and Andrew "Done Getting Punked" Short takes out Tyler Evans (still collecting for that negative karma he built up at the US Open?) for 3rd...

>> This "column" used to be better. Maybe check out the old ones if you're disappointed in the latest ramblings. Though there are some good things worth mentioning today :

>> Maybe Magazine has dropped (isn't that how all the kids say "debuted" these days?). Don't let the raw layout fool you, as the content is often funny and nice to look at. Considering the fact that the ever-anomaly, Porous Walker, just started learning HTML this is grand. Invited guests in issue 1 include FOBs Bob K, Lori D, Justin Goetz, Darin Bendall and Edith Abeyta. among other talented folks we haven't met yet. Good job Porous.

>> A few months back I did a custom, signed and limited edition (500) notepad for Ruby Republic. Well, you can now buy them online now in Bob K's Crownfarmer store... not a bad X-Mas gift — pocket-sized carry-about style with half blank pages and half gridded pages.

>> The Beatles "Let It Be... Naked" stripped down release of "Let It Be" is a really nice thing, marketing aside. It's just a strange thing thinking that two of these men have passed away and one of them may be one of the richest men on earth and the other, well, is Ringo Starr, and this comes out, redone and claimed as "the way they wanted it to be in the first place" some 35 years later... but I suppose the Beatles are way beyond being a "normal" band anyhow. More like a cultural phenomenon. So I'll try not to think about that too much as this is a great CD. Thanks to Emmet for the gift.

>> Tito Larue is a good writer unafraid to speak his mind. Read.

>> Well, here we are. Hello.

>> Got a box from Matt at Upper Playground. a few sets of the Jenkins/Fifty24SF shoe that are for sale in Japan only. All size 12. Not all size 12 in Japan, just in my box. Which is fine. Rickk wears a size 12 and Mikey floats in a pair — so they got the first two sets. Not sure what to do with the rest.

>> I've also got a real heavy box of my Fuel boards in the warehouse. What to do with those? Holiday gifts!

>> Must get back to work. Have to finish the Wallride and Ruby catalogs if I want to head to Mexico on the 27th...

>> Good Morning. A critique :

To: <andyjenk@bendpress.com>
Subject: Your website is too cold and impersonal.

Don't leave your web site visitors with unanswered questions. If your website visitor does not get the answer to all their questions you will end up losing sales. Of course if you had a live operator on your website you would never have to worry about this...

Hmmm. Ok, bring 'em on. I'll answer all your questions... I wouldn't want to lose any sales, so write.

>> Friend of Bend, Mark Winn, reminded me how much I like Kurt Vonnegut by sending me this quote:

"Paint and weapons have more in common than I previously realized. They both suggest to their owners surprising and possibly noteworthy things which might be done with them."
—Kurt Vonnegut, Fates Worse Than Death

Ying and yang.

>> I always forget to mention this guy and he has some good things going... just in case you don't know about him : Craig Metzger. Check the Friendmakers section on Enginesystem for his recent collab with fellow linemasters, Pendleton and Sieben.

>> Check out the custom plates at the Wurst Gallery. Don't bother trying to buy the Hersk or Lori D. plates, though... I already got 'em! Ha! But there are many other nice ones. Great holiday gifts, if you ask me.

BTW, The Wurst Gallery has the best tagline :

"Hope for the best, expect the Wurst."

>> Some nice design work for Shift over at the Igts site.

>> The way my luck's been going, my Russian "doll" probably didn't make it to the show Sat night... anyone go to that? Eddie? Metz?

Wait, I forgot, I don't believe in luck. Karma, maybe?

>> Ian Rogers is running Firfulayen Radio again today. Reception (no pun intended) was so good on Friday, he's set up another 10 hours of rotating music for our enjoyment. I highly recomend it if you are stuck in front of a computer all day like myself. I believe the playlists are up on his website as well.

>> Russian Doll show opens tomorrow night (12/6) at the 65 Hope Street Gallery in Brooklyn. Curated by the talented Eddie Martinez, the show features what is becoming a somewhat regular lineup for group shows; KozynDan, David Choe, Jeff Soto, Gary Baseman, Chris Yormick, Jordin Isip, Rick Jacobs, Don Pendleton and more... I finally finished mine and it'll hit the gallery just hours before the opening. Nothing new for me — sorry Eddie. Here's a a look at it. Yes, it IS a Russian doll; Title: "Daj Bog ne v poslednij raz" ("Hopefully it's not the last time when we drink, with God's help").

>> Have you checked out the Dirloz site yet? Do. Also, listen to today's Earfood, Fistfulayen Radio — tunes for today's soundtrack only. Great stuff so far.

>> Just got the new Lakai Summer/Fall 2004 catalog dropped on my desk. Mueller did an outstanding job on this one. And since it's out, I guess I can show you (click on the detail below) the new Wrench Pilot that's featured in it...

>> Thanks to all of you for sending in drawings for the Diurnals. Please keep on sending them, after all, we need a new one every day.

>> It's time. Diurnal's Round #3, DIURNAL TRES, is going up tomorrow. Mark Penxa is the first in the new "daily" drawing series.Good to have you back, Mark.

>> Salman Agah interview by Ohio Dave (any relation to Ed From Ohio?) over on TWSkateboarding. On the same topic; here's a great shot of Cab styling... in MX mode.

>> Back. 8.5 hours from Sacto to LA on Saturday. That's about 2 hours more than usual. Unreal traffic. Bought a George Jones greatest hits CD about halfway down... listened to it for 3 hours. First we laughed, then we listened, then we cried. Then we laughed again.

>> Late finishing my Russion dolls for that show at 65 Hope Street Gallery in Brooklyn curated by Eddie Martinez. Surprise! I'll send it tomorrow, Eddie. FedEx loves me.

>> Just realized we started "The Now" in December of 2000. We're out of the terrible 2s. Happy birthday Now.

>> I'm gone for 4 days without a computer or TV and all hell breaks loose in the Supercross pre-season. The defending champ, Ricky Carmichael, is out with ACL surgery planned. And the current rumor is that Chad Reed is ALSO out with a shoulder injury. Wow. What must DV, Ferry, Windham and Lusk be thinking about now? There are a few others who can't be counted out either... an interesting year stacking up. See you at the Anaheim Supercross in January.
