I got a call from chief editor at Skateboarder magazine, Aaron Mesa. They're looking for a new art director as Chris Yormick has moved to NYC. You got the skills? You want to spend a lot of time in front of a computer monitor designing one of the world's top skate mags? Want to locate to Los Angeles? Mag design is not for everyone, but it's awesome experience. Email Aaron at Skateboarder if you're into it, os know anyone who is. Oh yeah, do you skate? >> Remember the Jerky Boys? >> If you've got DIrect TV and you can manage to find it, Fox Television just launched ("soft launched" they call it low key) a brand new network: FUEL. It's an action sports channel 24-7. Skating, MX, Snowboarding, surfing... Anyhow, they asked me to contribute a 30 second animated interstitial for it and how the hell could I say no to that? Get to see my work move? Nice. Anyhow, mine is 2 out of the 100 they plan on creating with various artists. Saimon Chow did the first one. You can check out my piece here if you have a broadband connection it's fairly big. I'll try to resize a smaller version for you modem folks. A big thanks go out to the talented folks at Brand New School for their work on this. Also, if you watch FUEL closely and you'll find some Girl and Chocolate graphics sneaking up in some of the other Fuel promo pieces. Wider distribution of the network is coming. >> Rick Howard's new Lakai samples came in this week, they feature a set of insoles I drew out for him. I'm especially stoked to do these because Rick's feet are so notorious. Toxic. There will be updates on how his hold up. >> We're up to 539,482 on the World Internet Ranking Chart! At least, I think that's what it is. Can anyone explain this to me? >> Man, that's just too much self -promotion. My apologies. I'm leaving town for 10 days and I hope not to log on at all. See you in August. In the mean time go here... and then log off. 07/14/03 >> German skate company, Hessenmob, headed by designer, photographer, visionary, Christian Roth, is pressing ever onward, slowly accumulating years of great work. This new series of boards by England's Chimp is a recent example. Check it. >> Yeah Right. I've already seen this movie about 4 times (as many of you may have) in it's entirety, but last night I popped in the fresh DVD (just recieved at Girl last week) to check how the menus came out, and I sat through the entire thing again. This time I paused and frame-by-framed much of it. Example: Gino Iannucci's backside 360 ollie over a set. Holy. Then a few from the always innovative Marc Johnson. McCrank. Koston. Too many good skaters/lines to name. If you get a skate DVD this year, this one should be it. How cliché does that sound? You kow what they say about clichés, though... they're all true. This will be looked upon as a seminal work in 10 years. >> A couple new Bend nicknames were given out over the weekend (those of you listed may expect your cetificates this week). Porous Chill Ghost Walker Adrienne Apriesa* Feldman Here's the entire list thus far and this very well may be the end of the Bend nicknames, as the store has since been pulled. Ahhh, wait... I just realized I've named Porous twice. Let's just combine them, shall we? Porous Two Sheets Chill Ghost Walker, or something like that... (*Apriesa means "quickly" in Spanish. I thought it was fitting concidering it took me a year to come up with it.) >> Fresh Bend Diurnal contributor, illustrator, Nathan Fletcher would like you to check out his freshly uploaded web effort, My Broken Shoe. It's nice work, Nate. >> The most recent traffic ranking for Bend? We are #600,111. Up 41,356! from last week! Honestly, we have no idea what this means. See you tomorrow. 07/09/03 >> Yesterday in that interview I mentioned, I said something about "art," in it's broadest terms, being the saving grace of humanity. Jeez. Later, I regretted saying it because it just sounded so... dumb. Then, this morning, as I looked around... Driving on the streets, avenues and freeways of Los Angeles is like being thrown, or jumping into a raging river, then struggling to stay head-up during a thrashing all the way to your destination. There are all kinds of things around you getting beat down and swallowing water. Some of these folks panic, some fain confidence when they know damn well they are on the edge of drowning just like you are. Other are going down, sinking to the bottom and trying to drag you with them. ... I realized something. I have no idea what I'm getting at. But, I guess I may have been close on the statement about art. What else do we have to offer each other but the things we create and grace in presenting them to each other? 07/08/03 >> Okay, just spent an exhausting day being interviewed. I'm so done talking about myself. Wait... what is it I do here on Bend? Shit. I am one conflicted individual... What the fuck am I talking about? 07/07/03 (quick afternoon update) >> How is it possible that we've slipped from 604,391st on the web popularity list to 641,467th over the couse to just 5 or 6 hours? That's a drop of 37,076 websites! Even after putting that brilliant poem on the front page and getting that mini interview on Fecal!? Damn them. DAMN THEM ALL! 07/07/03 (late morning update) >> Bend Press ranked 604,391st web site! >> This came from Greg Carroll this morning it's a Maori proverb: "Turn your face to the Sun and the shadows will fall behind you." 07/07/03 >> Lori D. Day here at Bend. Check her long awaited Diurnal and a photo of her riding "Savage" (with thanks to Dylan Doubt). >> Jenkins (that's me, your narrator) mini interview up on Fecal Face.... plus the Metz and a few others you may recognize. Speaking of the Fecal, their discussion board, or, "forum," gets pretty heated, you might want to give it a browse. >> Here's a good article by FOB, Greg Barbera on balancing fatherhood and punk rock journailsm... >> Couple of good things happening on Bend this month if I ever find time : Oak Kelsey has been sending in words again, so as soon as I can edit and lay them out, they're in. Or on. Which is it on the net? Also, new B Team member debuts soon... and old Friend of Bend returns Rodger Bridges. >> DESTINATIONS OF PREVIOUS MOMENTS >> THE NOW (THEN) ARCHIVES Bend Press 22500 S.
